We staged a mini-jazz-blues & real-ale festival over the 9th and 10th of April between the Sebastopol Club (SSC) and the Open Hearth (OH) which are within staggering distance of each other. Both venues are listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and offer an extensive range of real ales between them.
Jamie Brownfield with the Rod Kelly trio- 18-year old trumpet player , a finalist in the BBC Rising Jazz Star Awards 2009, his CD with the Brownfield/Byrne Quintet 'Keepin' It Cool', came 4th in the 2009 British Jazz Awards.(Fri SSC)10-11.30pm John Paul Gard with Ben Waghorn and Eddie John- superb Hammond-based trio with the amazing Ben Waghorn on saxes. (Sat OH)10-11.30. **** Richard Jones will be wielding his axe on this gig as well, those who remember Richard's appearance with the Rogue Dolls last time will know this man can play!!! **** Mike Britton and Erika Lyons- sublime guitar and bass from two of the country's finest players. Mike's last season was for royalty, he was guitarist aboard the QE2 before she went out of service(Sat OH) 6-7.30pm The Jiveoholics The hottest jump jive band in Wales!!!(Fri OH) 7.45-9.15pm Grumpy Old Guitarists Hot Club Django Reinhardt style, a huge hit at Upton Jazz Festival (Sat OH) 8-9.30pm Gareth Roberts Quartet Top Welsh trombonist(Sat OH) 4-5.30pm Calling Card- Fabulous Blues Band-- Paul Keddle-guitar, Steve Shipman- harmonica, Ian Cooper- bass, Phil O'Sullivan- drums (Sat SSC) 7.30-9pm Richard Jones- .superb guitarist playing some roots, fingerpicking and slide guitar, some John Martyn, Taj Mahal, Eric Bibb, on John Paul Gard's gig too (Sat SSC) 3.30-5pm Wishful Drinkin' . Dave Lewis' new blues band (Fri OH) 9.45 10.45 and 11.00 -11.45 ish The Good Ol' Spit & Dribble Jass Band<< listen on the linked page. Ceri Williams' rollicking good-time New Orleans Band, featuring Keith Little on piano, Norman Thatcher-trombone, Sarah Thatcher- banjo and National Guitar, Clarence Nugent0 drums, Jayne Gregory- bass, Hugh Roberts on clarinet and sax joins the band, Hugh's tenor playing is reminiscent of the great Ben Webster and Lester Young (Sat SSC) 5.30-7pm Glen Manby quartet- Top-notch Charlie Parker-influenced alto player. Paula Gardiner, leader of the jazz course at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama on bass, Julian Martin - piano and Keith Niblett- drums. (Fri SSC) 8.15-9.40pm Jim Barber, Jon Goode, Damian Pugh trio- Stunning piano, bass and drums from this top trio (Sat SSC) 1.30-3pm Bryn Davies Quartet- 16-year old rising star tenor player Sat OH- 2-3.30pm Jim Barber, Erika Lyons and Mark O'Connor will be behind Jay Phelps (Sat SSC) Rod Kelly Trio will be behind JamieBrownfield (Fri SSC)
